Evidence‑based, inclusive care.

People come to us for many reasons. You or your child may be:
  • Communicating, learning, or playing differently from peers
  • Finding social situations or school/work expectations overwhelming
  • Experiencing sensory sensitivities or seeking sensory input
  • Feeling exhausted from masking or camouflaging
  • Showing big feelings or becoming easily dysregulated
  • Struggling with transitions, flexibility, or changes in routine
  • Feeling different but unsure why
  • Recommended for assessment by a GP, teacher, employer, or therapist

An assessment can help you understand why these experiences are happening and what supports may help you or your child feel safe, confident, and understood.

Why people seek an autism assessment

Spectrum Therapy Australia provides neuroaffirming autism assessments for children, adolescents, and adults in a calm, supportive environment. Our multidisciplinary team works closely with individuals and families to understand communication, sensory experiences, thinking styles, and daily participation. Our assessments are designed to help you gain clarity, confidence, and a clear path forward.

We recognise autism as a natural form of neurodiversity. Our assessments are designed to identify strengths, understand support needs, and help people access the right services, environments, and opportunities across all stages of life.

What an autism assessment can help with

A comprehensive autism assessment can:

  • Provide clarity about developmental or cognitive profiles
  • Identify strengths, sensory preferences, and support needs
  • Help families or individuals understand behaviour through a compassionate lens
  • Support access to services, school adjustments, workplace accommodations, and funding pathways
  • Reduce uncertainty and help you plan next steps with confidence

Many people tell us that an assessment helps them understand themselves or their child more deeply and advocate more effectively.

Who we support

We assess:
  • Preschool and school‑aged children
  • Adolescents and teens
  • Adults
  • People with diverse communication styles, including nonspeaking individuals
  • People who mask or camouflage
  • Autistic women and girls, gender‑diverse people, and those with subtle or internalised presentations
  • People with co‑occurring support needs (e.g., ADHD, anxiety, learning differences)

We tailor the process to each person’s comfort, communication style, sensory needs, and developmental stage.
We meet with you to discuss the results, answer questions, and plan next steps together.

5. Feedback session

You’ll receive a clear, accessible report outlining:

  • Strengths and interests
  • Areas where support may be helpful
  • Sensory and communication insights
  • Whether diagnostic criteria are met
  • Recommendations for home, school, work, and therapy

4. Comprehensive report

Teachers, support staff, or employers can provide valuable insight into participation in learning, social, or work settings.

3. School, workplace, or educator input (with consent)

Depending on age and needs, this may include:
  • Autism‑specific assessment tools
  • Cognitive or developmental assessments
  • Play‑based observation (for younger clients)
  • Social communication tasks
  • Sensory and behavioural questionnaires
  • Self‑report measures (for teens and adults)

We follow the individual’s lead and create a calm, predictable environment.

2. Standardised and observational assessment

For children and teens, this includes a parent/caregiver interview exploring early development, strengths, challenges, routines, and environments.

For adults, this may include a personal history interview and, where appropriate, input from someone who knows you well.

1. Initial consultation

Our assessments are conducted by registered psychologists experienced in neurodiversity, child development, and lifespan presentations of autism. An occupational therapist and/or speech pathologist may also contribute through observations, information gathering, and review of assessment findings.

What’s included in an autism assessment

How we keep assessments person‑centred

Whether supporting a child, teen, or adult, we ensure the process is respectful, predictable, and affirming.

We:
  • Follow the person’s pace
  • Use play, movement, or interests to build connection (for younger clients)
  • Avoid deficit‑based language
  • Respect all communication — spoken, typed, gestural, AAC, or behaviour
  • Create a sensory‑considerate environment
  • Prioritise comfort, autonomy, and consent

Our aim is for every person to feel understood, not judged.

Funding and rebates

You may be able to access:

Medicare rebates (with a GP referral)
Private health rebates (depending on your fund)
NDIS funding for self‑managed or plan‑managed participants

Spectrum Therapy Australia is not an NDIS registered provider.

We practise a neurodiversity-affirming approach. This means…

Inspiring every child to embrace their strengths and unique-nesses — at home, at school, and beyond.
