Emotional regulation is the ability to notice, understand, and manage our emotional responses in ways that allow us to keep participating in daily life. It doesn't mean suppressing emotions or always being calm. It means being able to experience big feelings without being completely overwhelmed by them, and returning to a regulated state after they pass.
For children, emotional regulation is a developing skill. Young children need a lot of support from the adults around them to regulate - over time, and with the right experiences, they gradually build the capacity to do more of this themselves. But for some children, this development takes longer or looks different — and big emotional responses can significantly affect daily life, relationships, and learning.
At Spectrum Therapy Australia, we understand that emotional regulation is deeply connected to sensory processing, nervous system differences, and the environment — as well as to skills and strategies. Our OTs take a whole-child approach, looking at all of these factors together.
"They should be able to calm down by now, other children their age can manage it."
"They're fine at school, so the meltdowns at home must be our fault."
"They just need firmer boundaries."
Often both, and ideally, together. An OT focuses on sensory processing, regulation, and practical daily strategies. A psychologist focuses on understanding emotions, cognitive strategies, and the emotional and relational aspects of regulation. The combination is often very powerful.
Co-regulation is the process of supporting a child to regulate their nervous system through your own calm, regulated presence - before they have developed the full capacity to do this independently. It's one of the most important things parents and caregivers can do, and our OTs can support you to do it effectively.
The Spectrum Therapy team is as diverse as they come — speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, exercise physiologists, and therapy assistants. They’re not just experts, they’re the secret sauce behind our whole-child approach.
