What is stuttering?

Stuttering is a fluency difference that affects the flow and rhythm of speech. It might look like repeating sounds or words, stretching out sounds, or moments where speech seems to get 'stuck'. You might also notice visible tension in the face, neck, or body when your child is trying to speak.

Stuttering is common in young children, in fact, around 1 in 12 children will stutter at some point during early childhood. For many, it resolves naturally. For others, having support from a speech pathologist can make a real difference to both their speech and their confidence.

At Spectrum Therapy Australia, we know that how a child feels about their speech is just as important as the speech itself. Our approach is always warm, supportive, and at your child's pace.

What does stuttering look like?

Stuttering can show up in different ways for different children.

Common signs include:
  • Repeating sounds, syllables, or whole words — like 'b-b-ball' or 'I I I want'
  • Stretching or prolonging sounds — like 'mmmmmy turn'
  • Moments where speech seems to get completely stuck or 'blocked'
  • Visible tension or effort in the face, jaw, or body when speaking
  • Secondary behaviours like blinking, looking away, or head movements
  • Avoiding speaking situations — like reading aloud, answering questions, or talking to new people
  • Expressing embarrassment, anxiety, or frustration about their speech

It's also worth knowing that stuttering can come and go, some days are better than others, and stress or excitement can affect fluency. This is completely normal.

What causes stuttering?

The exact causes of stuttering aren't fully understood, but research points to a combination of neurological and genetic factors. Stuttering tends to run in families, and brain imaging studies have found differences in the way speech is processed in people who stutter.

Stuttering is not caused by anxiety, parenting, or a traumatic event — though emotional and environmental factors can influence how fluent a child feels in different situations.

How can speech therapy help?

Speech therapy for stuttering looks different depending on your child's age, their stuttering profile, and what matters most to your family.

Support may include:
  • Fluency strategies to support smoother, more comfortable speech
  • Building confidence and reducing any anxiety around speaking
  • Helping parents and caregivers create a supportive communication environment at home
  • School support and guidance for teachers
  • For older children and teens: exploring their feelings about stuttering and building self-advocacy skills

Our goal is never just to 'fix' speech — it's to help your child feel comfortable and confident communicating in the ways that matter to them.

Many young children do recover from stuttering naturally — particularly girls, and children who start stuttering before age 3.5. But for others, early support makes a real difference. A speech pathologist can help you understand your child's individual risk factors and whether therapy is recommended.

Well-meaning advice like 'slow down' or 'take a breath' can sometimes increase a child's self-consciousness. A speech pathologist can give you practical, evidence-informed strategies that actually support fluency, and confidence.

"They'll just grow out of it."

Anxiety doesn't cause stuttering, though it can make it feel more noticeable in certain situations. Stuttering has neurological roots, it's not a sign that your child is anxious or shy.

about stuttering

If your child has been stuttering for more than 6–12 months, started stuttering after age 3.5, is a boy, has a family history of persistent stuttering, or is showing signs of distress, it's worth booking an assessment. Early support tends to produce the best outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Can speech therapy help teenagers who stutter?

Yes. Stuttering can impact confidence, friendships, classroom participation, presentations, interviews, and part-time work. Speech pathologists can support teenagers to better understand their stutter, develop communication confidence, and navigate situations that feel challenging. Therapy may include speech strategies, self-advocacy skills, reducing avoidance, and building confidence in speaking situations that matter to them. The goal is not simply to increase fluency, but to support meaningful participation and communication in everyday life.
