Global Developmental Delay (GDD) is a term used when a child is significantly delayed across multiple areas of development: including motor skills, language, thinking & learning, social skills, and daily living activities. It's typically identified in children under the age of five, before more specific diagnoses can be reliably made.
GDD is not a diagnosis in itself, it's a description of a child's current developmental profile. As children grow and are assessed more thoroughly, some will receive a more specific diagnosis (such as autism, an intellectual disability, or a genetic condition), while others' profiles will become clearer with time and continued support.
Whatever the underlying reason, children with GDD deserve early, thoughtful, and personalised support that builds on their strengths and helps them participate as fully as possible in family and community life.
"They'll catch up on their own if we give it more time."
"There's no point starting therapy until we have a diagnosis."
"A GDD diagnosis means my child's future is limited."
GDD is a term typically used for children under five, when it's too early to reliably diagnose intellectual disability. As children grow and receive further assessment, GDD may be replaced by a more specific diagnosis, or may no longer apply. A psychologist can help clarify your child's profile over time.
Consistent, loving routines, lots of play, and following your child's interests are among the most powerful things you can do. A psychologist can also work with you to develop strategies tailored to your child's specific profile and support needs.
Possibly. GDD is typically used for children under 5 years of age. If your child is now school-aged and continues to experience developmental, learning, or independence challenges, a reassessment may help clarify their current strengths, support needs, and whether a more specific diagnosis is appropriate.
Many children continue with a GDD diagnosis for years without further assessment, so families are often unsure whether the diagnosis still reflects their child's profile. A psychologist can help determine whether reassessment would be beneficial.
