Life transitions, starting school, moving to high school, preparing for exams, leaving school, starting university or work — are significant milestones for any young person. But for children and teens with developmental differences, sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or executive functioning challenges, these moments can feel particularly overwhelming.
Big transitions bring new environments, new routines, new social expectations, and new demands for independence. For a child who relies on predictability and familiarity, or a teen who is still building the organisational and self-management skills they'll need, these changes can create genuine stress — and sometimes, things can start to unravel.
With the right preparation and support, transitions can go smoothly. Our occupational therapists work with children, teens, and their families to plan ahead, build skills, and make sure every young person feels as ready and confident as possible for what comes next.
"If they managed the last transition fine, the next one will be fine too."
"OT is only for younger children."
"They'll adjust once they get there."
The earlier the better, ideally at least 6–12 months before a major transition. This gives enough time to build skills, put supports in place, and make sure your young person feels prepared rather than caught off guard.
Yes, OTs can provide assessments and functional capacity reports to support NDIS applications and plan reviews. We can also support young people directly with the daily living, work readiness, and community participation goals in their NDIS plan.
This is really common, and completely understandable. We work at the young person's pace and always focus on their goals, not just their parents' concerns. Often, when teens understand that OT is practical and relevant to things they actually care about, they engage really well.
