A whole-child look at how your child moves, senses, learns, and participates in daily life.

What does an OT Assessment cover?

An occupational therapy (OT) assessment explores how your child participates in the everyday activities that matter most - getting dressed, managing at school, playing, and regulating their emotions. It looks at the sensory, motor, cognitive, and emotional skills that make these activities possible, and identifies where support may help.

At Spectrum Therapy Australia, our OT assessments are strengths-based, family-centred, and neurodiversity-affirming. We build a full picture of who your child is and how they experience their world - not just what they find difficult.

Depending on your child's profile and your concerns, the assessment may explore:

Sensory processing - how your child responds to touch, sound, movement, taste, and visual input
• Fine motor skills - pencil grip, handwriting, cutting, and hand strength
• Gross motor skills - balance, coordination, core strength, and physical play
• Self-care and daily routines - dressing, mealtimes, hygiene, and morning routines
• Executive functioning - planning, organisation, task initiation, and flexible thinking
• Emotional regulation - how your child manages big feelings and transitions
• School participation - classroom tasks, organisation, handwriting, and learning readiness
• Play skills - imaginative play, turn-taking, and engagement with peers

Who can an OT Assessment support?

An OT assessment may be helpful if your child:

• Struggles with self-care tasks like dressing, eating, or personal hygiene
• Has difficulty with handwriting, drawing, or fine motor tasks
• Is unusually sensitive to sensory input or seeks a lot of sensory stimulation
• Has big emotional responses or difficulty recovering after feeling upset
• Finds it hard to get started on tasks, stay organised, or manage time
• Avoids physical play, seems uncoordinated, or tires easily
• Is Autistic, has ADHD, or has a neurodivergent profile affecting daily participation
• Struggles to manage the demands of the school day

No referral is required to book, though a GP referral may be needed for certain Medicare rebates.

Step 5 - Feedback and next steps

We recommend a parent feedback session to walk through the report together, answer your questions, and plan next steps. If therapy is recommended, we'll build a personalised plan with goals that are practical and meaningful for your family.

Step 4 - The report

Following the assessment, your speech pathologist will prepare a detailed written report covering your child's strengths, areas where support may be helpful, relevant scores, and personalised recommendations. Reports are typically ready within 4–6 weeks and released once full payment has been received.

Step 3 - Your involvement

Your observations matter. You'll be asked to participate in background questions and parts of the session. During specific tasks, your speech pathologist may ask you to observe quietly - they'll always keep you in the loop.

Step 2 - The assessment session

We'll ask you to complete intake forms covering your child's development, communication, and daily routines. Please submit these at least 3 business days before your appointment so your speech pathologist can prepare the right tools ahead of time.

Step 1 - Before your appointment

Our assessments are conducted by registered psychologists experienced in neurodiversity, child development, and lifespan presentations of autism. An occupational therapist and/or speech pathologist may also contribute through observations, information gathering, and review of assessment findings.

What happens at an OT Assessment?

Your speech pathologist will work with your child using play-based activities, conversation, and where appropriate, standardised assessments. The session is designed to feel engaging and low-pressure - not like a test.

How we keep assessments person‑centred

Whether supporting a child, teen, or adult, we ensure the process is respectful, predictable, and affirming.

We:
  • Follow the person’s pace
  • Use play, movement, or interests to build connection (for younger clients)
  • Avoid deficit‑based language
  • Respect all communication — spoken, typed, gestural, AAC, or behaviour
  • Create a sensory‑considerate environment
  • Prioritise comfort, autonomy, and consent

Our aim is for every person to feel understood, not judged.

Funding and rebates

You may be able to access:

Medicare rebates (with a GP referral)
Private health rebates (depending on your fund)
NDIS funding for self‑managed or plan‑managed participants

Spectrum Therapy Australia is not an NDIS registered provider.

We practise a neurodiversity-affirming approach. This means…

Inspiring every child to embrace their strengths and unique-nesses — at home, at school, and beyond.
