What does communication confidence look like?

What can affect a child's communication confidence?

Confident communication isn't just about having clear speech or correct grammar, it's about feeling comfortable expressing yourself, knowing you'll be understood, and being willing to speak up in different situations. For many children, this comes naturally over time. For others, communication can feel genuinely challenging — and that can have a real impact on friendships, learning, and wellbeing.

Children who struggle with communication confidence might be quiet or withdrawn in group settings, avoid speaking to people outside the family, have a strong reaction to being misunderstood, or seem anxious about speaking situations like reading aloud or answering questions in class.

At Spectrum Therapy Australia, we understand that communication confidence is deeply personal. We work at your child's pace, celebrate every step forward, and always make sure therapy feels safe and encouraging — never pressured.

There are many reasons a child might feel less confident in their communication. These include:

  • Speech sound difficulties that make them feel hard to understand
  • Stuttering or fluency differences that draw attention to their speech
  • Language difficulties that make it harder to find the right words
  • Social communication differences that make conversation feel unpredictable
  • A history of being misunderstood, corrected frequently, or teased
  • Anxiety or shyness that intersects with communication challenges
  • Selective mutism — a specific anxiety condition where a child speaks comfortably in some settings but not others

Often, communication confidence and communication skills are deeply intertwined — when one improves, so does the other.

What is selective mutism (situational mutism)?

Selective mutism (is more accurately  escribed  as situational mutism) — a term worth understanding more deeply — is an anxiety-based condition where a child who communicates freely in some environments feels genuinely unable to speak in others, such as at school, in social settings, or with unfamiliar people. Despite the name, there is nothing "selective" about it. The word implies choice, but there is none — the inability to speak in certain situations is an involuntary anxiety response, not stubbornness, defiance, or shyness.

Many children with selective mutism desperately want to communicate and find the experience of being unable to deeply frustrating. Their nervous system is not misbehaving — it is protecting them in the only way it knows how in that moment.

With early, patient, and supportive input — typically from a speech pathologist working alongside a psychologist — children with selective mutism can build the felt sense of safety they need to communicate more freely across different environments.

How can speech therapy help?

Building communication confidence is at the heart of everything we do at Spectrum Therapy Australia.

Depending on what's affecting your child's confidence, support may include:
  • Addressing any underlying speech, language, or fluency difficulties that are affecting how your child feels about communicating
  • Building skills and strategies that help children feel more in control of their communication
  • Gradual, low-pressure exposure to communication situations that feel challenging
  • For selective mutism: a carefully staged approach to reducing anxiety and building speaking confidence across settings
  • Working with parents and educators to create supportive environments that don't inadvertently increase pressure
  • Building on your child's strengths and celebrating the ways they communicate well

Selective mutism is a recognised anxiety disorder, not a choice or a behaviour. Children with selective mutism are not choosing to be silent — they are experiencing genuine anxiety that makes speaking feel impossible in certain situations.

Pressure and forced speaking can actually increase anxiety and make communication confidence worse over time. A gradual, supportive approach. (at the child's pace) produces far better outcomes.

"Selective mutism is just attention-seeking."

"Forcing them to speak in social situations will help them get used to it."

Myth

Shyness and communication anxiety are different things, and both deserve understanding and support. While some children do become more confident with time and positive experiences, others need targeted help to build the skills and strategies that make speaking feel safer.

FACT

"They're just shy, they'll come out of their shell eventually."

Myths and facts about communication confidence

If your child speaks freely and confidently at home but rarely or never speaks at school, with other family members, or in social settings. If their communication anxiety is affecting their participation and enjoyment of daily life, it's worth seeking an assessment. You know your child best.

How do I know if my child's quietness is a concern?

Yes, for some children and families, telehealth sessions work well. For others, particularly those with situational mutism, in-person therapy allows for more gradual work in real settings. Your speech pathologist will discuss what approach is likely to work best for your child.

Do I need a referral to see a speech pathologist for situational mutism?

Can therapy happen online for communication confidence concerns?

Yes, for some children and families, telehealth sessions work well. For others, particularly those with situational  mutism, in-person therapy allows for more gradual work in real settings. Your speech pathologist will discuss what approach is likely to work best for your child.
