AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It's an umbrella term for all the tools, strategies, and supports that help people communicate beyond — or alongside — spoken words.
AAC can include low-tech options like picture boards and communication books, or high-tech tools like speech-generating devices and communication apps. It can also include natural strategies like signing, gestures, and facial expressions.
AAC isn't a 'last resort' — it's a powerful pathway to communication, independence, and connection. And importantly, using AAC does not stop speech from developing. In fact, research consistently shows it can support it.
"My child isn't ready for AAC yet."
"AAC is only for children who will never speak."
"If we give them AAC, they'll never bother learning to talk."
If your child is finding it difficult to communicate their needs, express themselves, or be understood — and this is causing frustration or limiting their participation — it's worth exploring. A speech pathology assessment can help you understand your child's communication profile and whether AAC would be helpful.
It's completely normal to try a few different tools or approaches before finding the right fit. Our speech pathologists will monitor what's working, adjust the system as needed, and make sure your child and family feel supported throughout.
AAC devices and supports may be fundable through NDIS for self-managed and plan-managed participants. Spectrum Therapy Australia is not an NDIS registered provider. Your speech pathologist can help you navigate funding options and write supporting documentation where needed.
The Spectrum Therapy team is as diverse as they come — speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, exercise physiologists, and therapy assistants. They’re not just experts, they’re the secret sauce behind our whole-child approach.

Navigating the physical world is more than just playing on the monkey bars! OT helps teach essential life skills, like writing, using the bathroom, dressing independently, and emotion regulation and sensory difficulties.
Many of us take communication for granted, but its subtleties can be tricky for others. Our speech-language pathologists help your child master these language nuances and develop their social skills.
Therapy can benefit anyone, but for individuals with autism, it can be transformative. We provide a safe space to address big emotions, helping your child find calm, clarity, and confidence.
A diagnosis is more than a label. It’s an explanation. Understanding your child’s diagnosis is the first step to unlocking the right support and resources they need.
