Understanding big emotions in children and teens

Anger is a completely normal emotion — it's part of being human, and children need to learn how to experience and express it in healthy ways. But when anger becomes frequent, intense, or is expressed in ways that are harmful to the child or those around them, it can take a real toll on family relationships, friendships, and school life.

It's worth knowing that what looks like 'anger' is often driven by something else underneath- anxiety, frustration, shame, sensory overload, or a feeling of being misunderstood. At Spectrum Therapy Australia, we don't try to simply suppress big emotions. We help children and families understand what's driving them, and build the skills to manage them more effectively.

What might this look like?

  • Frequent, intense emotional outbursts that seem disproportionate to the trigger
  • Physical aggression — hitting, kicking, throwing objects, or destroying things
  • Verbal aggression — shouting, swearing, or saying hurtful things
  • Long periods of distress that are difficult to recover from
  • Difficulty identifying or communicating feelings before they escalate
  • Significant challenges with transitions, unexpected changes, or perceived unfairness
  • Remorse or shame after outbursts, followed by the same pattern repeating
  • Behaviour that is escalating over time or impacting family, school, or friendships

What's underneath it?

Big emotional responses in children are rarely just about the surface trigger. Common underlying factors include:
  • Anxiety or fear that presents as anger or aggression
  • Sensory overload — particularly in Autistic children or those with sensory differences
  • ADHD-related impulsivity and difficulty with emotional regulation
  • Unmet needs for connection, control, or predictability
  • Experiences of trauma, loss, or significant stress
  • Difficulty with language — finding it hard to name or express feelings before they overflow

Understanding what's really going on makes it possible to offer support that actually helps.

How can psychology help?

  • Building emotional awareness — helping children identify and name feelings earlier
  • Developing practical regulation strategies that children can actually use in the moment
  • Understanding and addressing the underlying triggers driving big emotions
  • Parent and caregiver guidance on responding in ways that reduce escalation
  • Problem-solving and social skills support where relevant
  • Collaboration with schools where anger is affecting classroom behaviour or relationships

Helping children name and understand their emotions (including anger) actually builds the self-awareness they need to manage big feelings more effectively. Avoiding the conversation doesn't reduce anger; it leaves children without the language and tools to make sense of what they're experiencing.

Children with significant emotional regulation difficulties often genuinely cannot access the rational part of their brain in the heat of the moment. This isn't a choice, it's a skill that needs to be built with the right support and practice.

"Talking about anger will just make it worse."

"They know better, they're choosing to behave this way."

Consequences alone rarely resolve significant emotional regulation difficulties — particularly when the behaviour is driven by anxiety, sensory overload, or unmet needs. Understanding and addressing the underlying cause tends to produce much more lasting change.

"They just need stronger consequences."

Myths and facts about ANger

Emotional regulation develops gradually throughout childhood and adolescence. Tantrums are developmentally normal in toddlers, but by school age children should be starting to manage emotions with adult support. If outbursts are frequent, intense, or escalating, it's worth speaking to a psychologist regardless of age.

At what age should children be managing their anger better?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from families. Our psychologists work closely with parents on practical, evidence-informed strategies — because how adults respond in the moment makes a big difference to how quickly children learn to regulate.

Could this be related to autism or ADHD?

How do I support my child during an outburst without making it worse?

Yes, both Autistic children and ADHDers can experience significant emotional regulation challenges, often related to sensory processing, impulsivity, or difficulty with transitions. Understanding your child's full profile helps us tailor support effectively.
