A neuroaffirming approach to autism support

At Spectrum Therapy Australia, we recognise autism as a natural form of human diversity, not a disorder to be fixed or a set of deficits to be corrected. Autistic children and young people have unique strengths, ways of thinking, and ways of experiencing the world that deserve to be understood and celebrated.

That said, many Autistic children do benefit from psychological support — not to change who they are, but to help them navigate a world that isn't always designed with them in mind. Our psychologists provide neuroaffirming, whole-child support that focuses on wellbeing, self-understanding, and the skills that help Autistic young people thrive.

What might an Autistic child or teen benefit from support with?

  • Anxiety: one of the most common co-occurring experiences for Autistic young people
  • Emotional regulation: understanding and managing big feelings
  • Navigating social situations: not to appear more neurotypical, but to feel more confident and comfortable
  • Understanding their own identity: building self-knowledge and self-advocacy skills
  • School-related stress: including demands around masking and social performance
  • Transitions: managing change and uncertainty
  • Sleep difficultie: which are particularly common in Autistic children
  • Low mood or depression: often linked to the experience of feeling different or misunderstood

Our approach

We believe the most important thing we can offer Autistic children and young people is a space where they feel genuinely understood, not observed, not corrected, but truly seen.

Our psychologists work collaboratively with children, teens, and their families, always taking the young person's perspective and priorities seriously. We draw on a range of evidence-informed approaches adapted to suit neurodivergent profiles, and we are informed by the insights and lived experience of the Autistic community.

We do not use approaches that aim to reduce or eliminate Autistic traits, encourage masking, or prioritise appearance of neurotypicality over genuine wellbeing.

How can psychology help?

  • Supporting emotional wellbeing and reducing anxiety
  • Building self-understanding and a positive autistic identity
  • Developing practical coping strategies for challenging situations
  • Parent and family support — helping families understand and respond to their child's needs
  • School collaboration and advocacy
  • Supporting co-occurring concerns like ADHD, anxiety, or learning differences
  • Psychological assessment, including autism assessments — see our Autism Assessment page for more

What looks like overdiagnosis is often better explained by improved awareness, broader understanding of how autism presents, and more Autistic people finally being seen and understood — including girls, women, and those who have spent years masking. A diagnosis doesn't create difficulties; it helps explain experiences that were already there, and can open doors to the right support, self-understanding, and community.

Autistic people experience the full range of human emotions — and many experience anxiety, low mood, or significant stress that they would benefit from support with. The way they express and process emotions may look different, but the need for understanding and support is just as real.

"Autism is overdiagnosed,  not every child who struggles needs a label."

Myths and facts about autism and psychological support

Yes. Spectrum Therapy Australia provides comprehensive, neuroaffirming autism assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. Please see our Autism Assessment page for more information about what's involved and how to book.

Do you offer autism assessments?

Absolutely, and this is often when support is most effective. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively, so your child's psychologist, OT, and speech pathologist can coordinate their approaches for a truly whole-child plan.

My child has recently been diagnosed, where do we start?

Can psychology support be used alongside OT and speech pathology?

A post-diagnostic support session with a psychologist can be a really helpful first step. We can help you and your family understand the assessment findings, think about what support might be most helpful, and connect you with the right services. You're not alone in navigating this.
