When getting to school feels impossible

What might School Can't look like?

When a child or teenager is consistently finding it very difficult to attend school, it can be frightening and overwhelming for the whole family. If this is happening in your household, the first thing to know is that this isn't about defiance or laziness, for most children who struggle to attend school, the difficulty is driven by genuine anxiety, distress, or overwhelm.

We prefer the term 'school can't' to 'school refusal',  because for many children, it truly feels like they cannot go, not that they won't. This distinction matters, because it changes how we understand and respond to the situation.

At Spectrum Therapy Australia, we take school-based distress seriously. We work with children, teens, and families to understand what's driving the difficulty and develop a supported, gradual pathway back to attendance — at a pace that doesn't overwhelm.

  • Significant distress - tears, physical complaints, or panic — on school mornings
  • Physical symptoms with no medical cause: stomach aches, headaches, or nausea
  • Leaving school during the day or refusing to go in
  • Partial attendance - attending some days but not others, or only part of the day
  • Extended absences that are increasingly difficult to recover from
  • Appearing fine on weekends but becoming increasingly distressed as Monday approaches
  • Heightened anxiety about specific aspects of school, social situations, performance, teachers

What's behind it?

  • Anxiety, social anxiety, generalised anxiety, or separation anxiety
  • Autism or sensory differences, the school environment can be genuinely overwhelming
  • ADHD or learning difficulties, finding the academic or organisational demands of school very hard
  • Bullying or difficult social experiences at school
  • Low mood or depression
  • Trauma or significant life events
  • School transitions, starting a new school, moving to high school, or returning after a break

How can psychology help?

Support for school can't at Spectrum Therapy Australia is collaborative, gradual, and focused on reducing distress rather than simply increasing pressure to attend.

 It may include:
  • Understanding the specific drivers of your child's school-based distress
  • Building coping and anxiety management skills
  • Developing a gradual, supported return-to-school plan in collaboration with the school
  • Addressing co-occurring concerns like anxiety, depression, or learning difficulties
  • Parent guidance on how to respond in ways that reduce distress and support engagement
  • Direct liaison with the school to ensure appropriate support is in place
  • Coordination with GPs or paediatricians where relevant

The vast majority of children who struggle to attend school are experiencing genuine distress. The physical symptoms (stomach aches, headaches, nausea) are real physiological anxiety responses, not fabrications. Treating the distress as real and addressing its causes is the most effective path forward.

"Just make them go. The longer they're out, the harder it gets."

FACT

"They're just being manipulative."

While it's true that extended absence makes return harder, forcing a highly distressed child to attend without addressing the underlying causes can increase anxiety and damage trust. A gradual, supported approach — with the right help in place — produces much better long-term outcomes.

Myths and facts about school can't

Myth

This varies significantly depending on the severity of the difficulty, how long it's been going on, and what's driving it. A gradual approach is almost always more sustainable than a sudden return. Your psychologist will work with you and the school to develop a realistic, achievable plan.

How quickly can we expect a return to school?

What role does the school play?

The school is a critical partner in supporting return to attendance. Our psychologists work closely with schools to ensure appropriate adjustments are in place, including flexible attendance plans, check-in systems, safe spaces, and reduced pressure during the transition back.
